Origin/meaning

The arms were granted when the area was still part of South Africa on April 29, 1988.

This local authority is situated at the mouth of the Kuiseb river. It is a rich fishing area with large flocks of pelicans, while the shield has been so partitioned as to represent the Kuiseb river flowing into the sea from the adjacent desert. This river, in fact, seldom flows but it is the thought that counts.
