SOUTH HOLLAND

Additions : 1974 East Elloe RDC (Holbeach UDC, Long Sutton UDC, Sutton Bridge UDC), Spalding RDC, Spalding UDC

Arms (crest) of South Holland

Official blazon

Arms : Barry wavy of six Azure and Argent in front of two Crosiers in saltire a representation of the Elloe Stone issuant on a Chief Or an open Book proper edged Or bound between two Tulip Heads Gules.
Crest : On a Wreath of the Colours a Heron proper supporting with the dexter foot a Cornucopia erect Or replenished with flowers fruit and cereals proper.
Motto: 'PROGRESS THROUGH ENDEAVOUR'.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on ?

The arms are mainly derived from those of the three constituent areas. The shield has a background of blue and white waves like those in the Spalding Rural District Council and East Elloe Rural District Council arms, representing the waterways of the area. On these lie two crossed crosiers for the monastic foundations, Castle Acre Priory, Spalding Priory and Crowland Abbey, and the Elloe Stone, which marked the site of the Hundred Court of Elloe, the local government unit of mediaeval times which governed most of the South Holland area.

Above is the gold chief and book representing the Spalding Gentlemen's Society, a pioneer in local culture, and two tulip heads, all from the Spaiding Urban District Council shield and that of Holland County Council.

The crest is a heron from the Holland arms, symbolizing the characteristic local fauna, supporting a gold cornucopia from the Spalding Rural District Council arms, indicating the flora and rich produce of South Holland.

The motto is that of Spaiding Rural District Council.
