HOWARD JOSEPH CARROLL

Born: August 5, 1902
Deceased: March 21, 1960

Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown, 1958-1960

Arms (crest) of Howard Joseph Carroll
Official blazon
English blazon wanted
  • (personal half) Sable, two lions rampant, affrontes supporting a chalice or, in chief an annulet a cross moline betwwn four plates argent, in base a bar checquy argent and azure.

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The two lions are taken from the arms of an Irish O'Carroll family and thus represent the family name of the bishop. The chalice is a symbol for priesthood. The cross within a circle refers to the National Catholic Welfare conference. The chequered bar is a reference to the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
