Origin/meaning
Bishop Pelham's personal arms are the ancesteral arms of the Earls of Chichester. The Bishop was the third son of Thomas Pelham, 2nd Earl of Chichester and his wife Lady Mary Henrietta Juliana Osborne, eldest daughter of the 5th Duke of Leeds. The pelican wounding itself is also used as a symbol of Christ sacrifying himself for humanity.
