Origin/meaning
The arms of Archbishop Coleridge have changed considerably during the years.
As auxiliary he designed his first arms. The blue of the shield is symbolic of the heavens where there stream the blood and water flowing from the side of Christ as an eternal promise that there is no wound which cannot become a fountain. Set in the upper part of the shield is the Lion of Saint Mark, symbolising not only the Evangelist and his patron saint, but also the Gospel of which he was a servant.
In the lower half of the shield is the star representing Mary, the Morning Star.
In Canberra and Brisbane he impaled his personal arms with the arms of the Archdioceses. In the different versions of his arms, he retained the winged lion of St. Mark and the red and silver from the initial arms. The latter were changed fro a wavy bend sinister to a number of (sinister) bends.
The motto Sanguis et Aqua, 'Blood and Water' is taken from the Gospel of Saint John: 'One of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance and immediately there flowed forth blood and water'.
