LOUGHREA
County : Galway
Official blazon
Barry wavy of eight azure and argent, a cross gules surmounted by a lymphad, sail set and oars in action, or, with the Motto: Dia d'ar stiuru.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on May 9, 1978.
The field is barry wayy azure and argent, a standard heraldic method of representing water, and recalls the lake from which the town takes its name.
The red cross, taken from the de Burgo arms, recalls the origin and history of the town.
The lymphad, or ancient galley, in the centre represents the strong association of St. Brendan with Loughrea.
The motto adopted is "Dia d'ar Stiuru"- i.e "God Our Steerer."
