Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on July 3, 1930.
Trieste was founded in the 2nd century BC as Tergeste. It belonged to Austria from 1381-1797 and 1814-1919. The arms bear the spear of St. Sergius, the patron saint of the city.
Until 1919 the arms showed the spear on the Austrian arms (in red a silver bar), with a chief with the imperial eagle. These arms were granted in 1467 and were abolished after Trieste became Italian in 1919.
