ŠIBENIK

County : Šibenik-Knin

Arms of Šibenik

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially adopted on July 24, 1998.

The arms of Šibenik originate from the seals of the city, known since the 13th century. It shows the patron of the city, the Archangel St. Michael wearing a white tunic and a red cloak, with his wings displayed, holding a golden orb with a cross and a golden spear with which he kills a black devil beneath him.

Historically the arms showed the saint behind a city wall and with a sun and crescent in the chief.

In the 1980s the historical coats of arms of the cities depicting saints were no longer accepted and new symbols were being made. The one used by Šibenik depicted the panorama of the old city with fortresses, walls and the cathedral above the waves and with a large red five-pointed star in the base. The shield was topped with the name of the city.

In the early 1990s the arms were shown again based on the older arms with the saint behind a wall.
