TRAPANI
Region : Sicilia
Province : Trapani
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on August 11, 1928.
The sickle in the chief is a symbol of fertility and at the same time has a mythological and geographical backgroud; Trapani lies on a sickle-shaped peninsula which, according to legend was created when Demeter lost her sickle while she was looking for her daughter Persephone. The sickle fell down on the sea, and the peninsula was created. The ancient name of Trapani was "Drepanon", that, in Greek, means "sickle".
The five towers on the castle symbolize the first five towers in the defence walls of the town: 1) Torre Pali (Pali Tower), 2) Torre Oscura (Oscura Tower), 3) Castello di Terra (The Castle), 4) Colombaia (Colombaia Tower), and 5) Torre Vecchia (Old Tower)
