The arms were officially granted on May 12, 1792 and re-granted on June 19, 2002.
The arms should refer to growth of the town (laurel) and justice for citizens (sword).
In early 20th century another variant was used due to the inexact description of historian Jan Obst (the original was not available at the time): without base, with a laurel branch instead of a tree, and with counterchanged positions of the laurel and sword.
