Impaled. Dexter : Gules, a hart or, bearing the Paschal banner proper, the staff paleways of the second, and trip pant over a ford barry -wavy of six argent and azure; Sinister: Argent, between three mullets azure, a lion rampant gules charged with a crescent of the field.
MOTTO: In caritate Dei. "In the charity of God." (2 The. 3:5)
Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The personal arms are based on the arms of the McAuliffe family: Argent, three mullets and in fesse three mermaids. The lion is for St. Maurice and the crescent is for St. Francis de Sales, the Bishop's patron saints.
The motto means "In the charity of God" (2 The. 3:5).
