The design of the SSI alludes to the Number of the Corps.  
The design of the SSI alludes to the Number of the Corps. The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the VIII Corps by telegram on 18 Dec 1918 and officially announced on 17 Jun 1922. It was redesignated for the VIII U.S. Army Corps on 19 Dec 1957. A distinctive unit insignia for the VIII U. S. Army Corps was not approved.
VIII Corps was inactivated in 1968.

English On a blue octagon 2 1/4 inches (5.72cm) in diameter a white block figure "8", 1 3/8 inches (3.49cm) in height within a white border. Blue margin 1/8 inch (.32cm) in width, white border 1/8 inch (.32cm) in width, elements of white figure "8" 3 /16 inch (.48cm) in width.


Origin/meaning
