EGLISAU
Canton: Zürich
Official blazon
- (de) In Gold auf grünem Dreiberg ein stehender schwarzer Hirsch.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially adopted on September 30, 1927.
The deer as a symbol for the small city of Eglisau appears first in a chronicle from 1488. Ever since a deer has been the symbol of the city, but the meaning of the deer is unknown.
During the centuries the deer has been displayed in many different ways. Most images show a black deer as in the current arms, sometimes the deer is facing the other direction, the small hill is missing or the colour is different. A brownn version appears on the old school building from 1682 and in two local armorials (one from 1547) the colours are reversed (golden deer in black).
As the local banner also showed a black deer in gold as early as 1513, the local council decided for these colours in 1927.
