The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, known since the 15th century. The seal showed the patron saint of the local church at the time, St. Michael. The colours were adopted in 1996.
 
The previous arms were adopted on February 8, 1989.

The green and black refer to the green fields and the oil mining in the municipality. Green and black are also traditional mining colours. The wooden container of bucket is a canting element, gbel in Slovak.
