Origin/meaning
The arms were designed and granted in 1939 and formally registered in 1974.
The monogram with the letter M dates from the early 14th century and is known from a seal of the city from 1307. The medieval parish church was devoted to St. Mary, which explains both the letter M and the roses, which appear in the seals from the 1370s (without the M). The two symbols were combined in 1939.
