Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on June 24, 1974.
The arms show in the lower part of the shield the fields and the water that played an important role in the development of the region. The silver bend denotes the M62 motorway that runs through Kirklees and which is the main communications link of the area.
The blue cogwheels in the upper part represent industry, whereas the Paschal Lamb is the symbol of St. John Baptist, the patron saint of the wool-workers. The ram's head on the crest also denotes the importance of sheep-rearing and the wool industry in the local history.
The supporters are taken from the arms of the de Laci family, medieval landlords in the area. The two crosses with fleur-de-lis are taken as a symbol for the name of Kirklees, which is derived from the priory of Our Lord and Our Lady nearby the present city.
