D’azur semé de fleurs de lys d’or, à l’Agneau pascal d’argent, la tête contournée, nimbée d’or, portant une Croix tréflée d’argent, à la bordure enflammée de gueule.

Origin/meaning

The Paschal Lamb, in the heart of the coat of arms, symbolizes Christ: this is how John the Baptist (Jn 1:29) or Saint John in his Apocalypse designates it. This lamb therefore also recalls Saint John the Baptist, patron of the diocese to whom the cathedral is dedicated. It also refers to his name Pascal.

The Lamb wears a silver trefoil cross: this cross is that of Saint Maurice, which can also be seen on the arms of Bourg-en-Bresse and many cities of the Ain department; it originates from the time when the Ain region was part of the Duchy of Savoy, Saint Maurice being one of the patrons of the Kings of Savoye.

The fleur-de-lys are a symbol of France as well of St. Mary. The presence on the arms of Bishop Roland therefore recalls the deep devotion of the bishop to the Virgin Mary, as well as to Our Lady of Moulins.

Finally, the fiery border symbolizes the new evangelization, to which echoes the motto of Archbishop Roland: “Prædicate Evangelium "," Proclaim the Gospel "(Mc, 16, 15).
