WALTER JOSEPH SCHOENHERR

Born: February 28, 1920
Deceased: April 27, 2007

Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit, 1968-1995; Titular Bishop of Timidana

Arms (crest) of Walter Joseph Schoenherr
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms show a medieval ideogram for human beings, a stylized Y. The ideograms, side by side, are gold and silver. They symbolize the People of God working together in an attitude for prayer. The gold and silver coloration represents persons of all races, creeds, and nationalities working in unison. The purple reminds us that unity among people is also rare and we must do penance so that all will cooperate in community.

The arms are also inspired by the Bishop's motto: CHRIST MUST INCREASE. It is a paraphrase of the biblical quotation in which John the Baptist speaks of Jesus: "He must increase, but I must decrease." (Jn 3:30)

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
