BIRKERØD
Region: Hovedstaden
Amt (until 2007): Frederiksborg
Additions: 1970 Bistrup
Incorporated into: 2007 Rudersdal
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially registered in 1938.
The arms are in use since 1923 and are a symbol for the many forests in the municipality. The trees supposedly are canting birches (Birke). The trunk and hammer symbolise the clearing, rydning, of the forest and are thus canting for the last part of the name. The name, however, actually means "the place where Birka has cleared the forest".
