The arms were officially granted on September 8, 1982.

In the design of the arms the following themes are taken into account - geographical location of Kilrush, the church by the wood symbolised by the old style cross botonny and the circle of fire to signify the ESB generating station at Moneypoint. The motto is Ciall agus Neart - resolve and fortitude.
