PARISH OF ST. GEORGE (Pickering Village, Ajax, Ontario)

Denomination : Anglican

Arms (crest) of Parish of St. George's, Pickering Village

Official blazon

Argent a cross enhanced Gules over all a billet charged with a cross pattée fitchée all counterchanged and in base issuant from each flanc a demi fir tree in pale Gules; Motto: GLAD OF THY WORD

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 31, 1996.

The white field and red cross are the arms of Saint George and have been used to identify the Church of England for many centuries. The billet or rectangle represents the grant of land on which the parish was built in 1845. The cross pattée fitchée is taken from the arms of the Archbishop of Canterbury and was a symbol for Anglicans in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The pine trees symbolize both the primordial forest and the trees that surround St. George’s Church.

The motto is taken from Psalm 119:162, “I am as glad of thy word, as one that findeth great spoil”.
