The arms are based on the 15th or 16<sup>th</sup> century seal of the city. The oak tree is a canting symbol, for the -hage part of the name (Hage=bushes). The small shields show the arms of the Knights of Uchtenhage, Lords of Freienwalde in the 14<sup>th</sup> century.
The arms are based on the 15th or 16<sup>th</sup> century seal of the city. The oak tree is a canting symbol, for the -walde part of the name (Wald=forest). The oldest seals showed a linden tree, but in the 16th century this was replaced by an oak tree on the seals.
 
The small shields show the arms of the Knights of Uchtenhage, Lords of Freienwalde from the 14<sup>th</sup> century until 1618.
