TURKU - ÅBO
Region : Varsinais-Suomi
Former province : Länsi-Suomi (until 1997 Turku and Pori)
Additions : 1967 Maaria; 1968 Kakskerta; 1973 Paattinen
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on February 8, 1966.
The arms show the symbols of St. Mary, one of the patron saints of the city, the fleur-de-lys and the monogramme. The letter can also be seen as a letter A, for the Swedish name Åbo.
The composition already appeared on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1309.

The colours were not very clear, in the middle of the 19th century the shield for example was shown in red, later in blue. The colours were only officially determined in 1966.
