SENIEJI TRAKAI
County : Vilnius
Municipality : Trakai
Lithuanian | blazon wanted |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on July 24, 2001.
Senieji Trakai was the residence of Gediminas, before he inherited the throne of Grand Duke of Lithuania. More than a century Trakai was the sub-capital of Lithuania, and the legendary tradition calls it "the second capital". The arms show the arms of the Gediminas dynasty. Senieji Trakai was the residence of this house, before they established Naujieji Trakai (now Trakai city) in the mid 14th century. This Gothic variant of the arms is known from the Bergshammar roll of arms from the early 15th century and was almost forgotten for centuries. So it was chosen as the symbol of ancient capital of Trakai duchy and of Lithuania.
