Origin/meaning

The arms were designed and granted in 1949 and officially registered in 1974.

The arms are based on an old seal for Övertorneå where among other things, some stars and an animal were shown, which has been interpreted as an fox, in connection to ancient Roman sources about black fox fur, which perhaps had been obtained from this area.
