The problems with the arms of Steenwijk started in 1973, when the surrounding municipality Steenwijkerwold was merged with Steenwijk. The city initially wanted new arms, which are shown above. The arms showed a castle for the city of Steenwijk, which in 1581 was under siege (flaming cannon ball), but which never surrendered (closed gate). The anchor is placed below the castle. The two crosses are taken from Steenwijkerwold. The division of the shield indicates the position of the city in the moors of the area. As supporter the H. Clement was used (not on the picture above). The [http://www.hogeraadvanadel.nl Hoge Raad van Adel] (Dutch College of Arms) did not agree with these arms, for several reasons. The city, however, still wanted the arms. After a long legal debate, which eventually led to questions in Parliament, the battle ended with the present arms. The present arms show the city of Steenwijk, shown as a 17th century fortress with the anchor in the middle, surrounded by Steenwijkerwold, represented by the crosses.
