Origin/meaning

Spiekeroog is a small island in the Wattenmeer (Wadden Sea) in the North of Germany. The island was only inhabited by fishermen and traders, who traded mainly with the Netherlands. It had no own seal or arms until 1968.

The arms show a medieval kogge ship, the main ship of the Hanseatic league and the coastal areas in the north of Germany. The colours are the colours of Friesland, as all the islands historically belonged to Friesland.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
