Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 13, 1948 and in above composition adopted on June 22, 1992.

The arms show three pine trees and a wavy bar. The pine trees are a symbol for the forests in the area, the wavy bar is the Saale.

On the original design from 1948 the arms were surrounded by 8 medaillons, each with symbols of one of the main industries in the district; Forestry, Mining, Agriculture, Printing, Leather industries, Textile industries, China manufacturing and Machine manufacturing. These, however, were never used around the arms.
