Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 1, 1954 and again on March 22, 1981.

There were no historical arms or seals of the two old municipalities that merged in 1936 to Schmelz. The escutcheon shows an oven used for melting (Schmelzen) the iron ore. The first ovens were already in use in the 16th century. In 1720 new ovens were built by Marquis Charles Louis de Lénoncourt, which were in use until 1870. The cross is taken from the arms of the Lénoncourt family.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
