English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The lion already appears on the 13th century seals of the city and the arms thus have never changed. The lion most likely is derived from the Kingdom of León.
The letters surrounding the shield are the initials of the titles the city received during the wars in the 19th century (Napoleon and the independence war of 1838) : Muy Noble, Muy Leal, Muy Heroica, Muy Benéfica, Siempre Heroica e Inmortal.
Hidalguia, Madrid, 1985.
