Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The arms of Bishop Connolly are based on the arms of the Connolly family of Ireland as the bishop's ancestors come from County Monaghan. The original Connolly arms are charged with five escallop shells which are the heraldic indication for James, the Baptismal name of His Excellency. The saltire, in the shape of the Greek letter Chi, is appropriate for a bishop as a successor of the Apostles, because it is a liturgical symbol for Christ the Supreme Shepherd.

A fleur-de-lys has been substituted for the escallop shell in the fess point of honor of St. Louis, whose name Bishop Connolly also bears.

The colors, silver and blue, are the colours for Saint Mary and are fittingly represented in the charges of the shield since the bishop has chosen the motto, "Auspice Maria."

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See.
