SYLVESTER JOSEPH ESPELAGE
Born : March 24, 1877
Deceased : October 25, 1940
Prefect of Wuchang, 1925-1930
Apostolic Vicar of Wuchang, 1930-1940; Titular Bishop of Oreus
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The personal arms show an aspen tree, Espe in German and thus a canting element, also referring to the German ancestry of the bishop. The chief shows the arms of the Franciscan Order, to which the bishop belonged. The same design of the personal arms was also used by his brother Bernard Theodore Espelage.
