Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The theme of the white shield, symbol of peace, is enhanced by arrows reversed and interlaced to form a cross. The interlaced arrows thus succinctly summarize the motto: "Strengthen One Another" taken from St. Paul's letter to the Romans:14;19. The arrows honor Bishop Pelotte's Indian ancestry and heritage.

The red canton charged with a chalice with a host tinctured silver has been adapted from the new insignia of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
