Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms are based on the arms of two Irish families. An (unrelated) Scanlan family used as arms a pointed division line and three lions, which were adopted by the bishop to represent Scanlon. The lower lion was replaced by a chevron and a dove taken from an (unrelated) Coleman family and represents his mother (who was also named Coleman).
