JOHN PATRICK CARROLL
Born : 22 February 1864
Deceased : 2 November 1925
Bishop of Helena, 1904-1925
Official blazon
Sable, two lions combatant supporting a cross-staff or.
Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The personal arms are based on the arms of a Carroll family from Ireland as a symbol for his family name. On the original family arms the lions hold up a sword : as an appropriate difference, this has been changed to the processional cross of a bishop.
