Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on June 30, 2005.
The town developed around a fortress manned by Cossacks in the 19th century against the Circassians. The arms thus show a watch tower, with two Cossack spears and the purple colour of the Cossack uniforms.
The modern city is a major transportation hub, where several railway lines and motorways cross. This is reflected in the two crossed green bends which symbolise the intersection of roads.
The previous arms of the city were adopted on July 26, 1996.
These arms show the railway lines, the watch tower, symbols for industry, agriculture and mining, as well as the Black Sea.
