Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on September 24, 1963.

The town was founded as Brahestad and the arms are based on those of Count Per Brahe who founded the city. They appear on the 17th century seals of the city.

In the middle of the 19th century B, Kene proposed some changes, by adding the provincial arms in the upper right corner and placing two anchors behind the shield. These were not adopted. Also the stone cairn as in the original and current arms, was misinterpreted as a beehive.
