Origin/meaning

The ship in the arms represents the Phoenix, one of the greatest ships ever on the Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Middle-Europe. The lion is taken from the arms of the Festetics-family, former owners of the city, who built the baroque-style palace of Keszthely, and who founded one of the first agriculture-universities in Europe in the town (the Georgikon).
I have no information on the meaning of the crane.

During communist rule the city used the arms below, with as symbols again the ship and for the university a wheat ear and the book. The star was the symbol of the Communist Party.
