Wappen von Wels

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 11, 1963

The arms are based on the oldest seals of the city. The oldest seal dates from 1295 and already shows a gate for the city, and the small arms of Austria. The base already showed the waves for the Traun river, but a later seal, from the 16th century showed the castle on a mountain. In the late 18th century the small shield was replaced by the Imperial Eagle of the Emperors. In the early 20th century the old arms were restored.
