Origin/meaning

Valkininkai received city rights from Stanislaus Augustus on June 26, 1792. At the same day he granted the new city the use of a golden lion on a red (round) shield. The lion supposedly symbolised strength, pride and nobleness.

In 1793 the arms were abolished, only to be regranted on March 30, 1993.
