Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1991.
The cross of St Andrew represents the Scottish background of the area, the ram's head represents the primary land use in the area along with sheaves representing cropping. The axe and mallet represent industry with the Lymphad representing the fishing and exporting industries.
The Coronet represents the District Council level of Local Government. The supporters are birds (a kea and a kiwi) that are found within the district that are rare and endangered while the ferns are at the bottom of the shield represent Fiordland National park which is contained within the District.
