The arms were officially granted and abolished in 1970, regranted on January 26, 1998.

The arms were designed in 1847, and its meaning is not very clear. Green, white (silver) and red are the traditional colours of Lithuania Minor, but Šakiaiis not a part of that region but of Suvalkija, even if related both ethnically and historically.

Sheaves of flax should refer to the traditional linen manufacture. The points are probably forks, and thus canting: "forks" is "sakes" in Lithuanian. It would be a unique case as these arms were designed during Russian Empire (1847) but are canting in Lithuanian. On the other it is the only Lithuanian arms of those times designed by citizens themselves, however not officially granted that time.
