Schleiden was sometimes mentioned as a city in the 13<sup>th</sup> century, but there is no historical proof for city rights. The oldest known seal dates from the 14<sup>th</sup> century and shows a baldaquin under which two persons hold a shield with the lion of the Counts of Schleiden. The latter seals also show the same composition.
