===Origin/meaning===

====Origin/meaning====
The arms of the city (former German name Preussisch Friedland) show a running boar. The boar, whose origin is not known, appears already on the oldest, 14th century, seal of the city. The boar first faced left, but since the 17th century the boar faces right. The black gridlines (used on the seal as a simple decoration) behind the boar are now officially part of the arms and are still used.
