Cieszyn was founded in the 8<sup>th</sup> century but became a town before 1263. The name of the town derives from Polish names of Cieszan or Cieszko. The arms of the town were granted in the 14<sup>th</sup> century. It consists of a castle with an open gate situated on a river (Cieszyn is situated on the Olza River).
