Pankow was first mentioned in 1311 and became a possession of the city of Berlin in 1370. It remained a small village until the late 19<sup>th</sup> century. In the early 20<sup>th</sup> century it became a suburb and in 1920 part of Berlin. The arms are based on the single seal of Pankow, dating from the middle of the 19<sup>th</sup> century.
