Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1938.

Balvi is first mentioned in 1224. It was called Bolwen in German. In 1864 the marketplace was established in Balvi, called Baloffsk, later Bolva in Russian, and the town developed gradually.
In 1928 city rights were granted.

The arms show a wolf's head. It means strength and persistence and has no historical meaning.
