Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese (Metuchen/Washington) impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The gold cross on red honors Terence James Cooke, Archbishop of New York, under whom McCarrick served as an auxiliary bishop. The silver crown at the center of the cross honors the Queenship of Mary on whose feast day Mccarrick was ordained a priest.
In the first quarter is a silver rock. The rock is the Gaelic root of the surname McCarrick and complements the gold lion in the second quarter, honoring McCarrick's mother, who was a McLaughlin. In the third quarter is a sunburst commemorating the early years of the McCarrick's priesthood in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. In the fourth quarter three silver ermine spots have been adapted from the Arms of Francis Joseph Spellman, Archbishop of New York, who ordained Mccarrick a priest.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop (and cardinal) by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
Uniquely, when he resigned from the College of Cardinals, he reverted to his personal arms, with the symbols of an Archbishop Emeritus.
