Origin/meaning
It is assumed that the shield goes back to the epoch of the crusades, (in fact since the first crusade, in 1097, the warriors were embarked also from Bari harbour), and the colour white symbolised the pure and candid faith, while the red one represented the blood poured in defense of the same one. In the past, over the shield there was the figure of Saint Nicholas, patron of Bari, but later this image was replaced by the crown, that distinguished the communities having city rank.
