Origin/meaning
The arms were designed in 1953.
The cross is the symbol of Portugual and at the same time of Christianity.
The Colonial Gate was a typical landmark and main entrance of the city. It lies beneath a golden line to show the fertility of the soil in this region.
The Caravel (the ship) represents the ship (Nau da Nossa Senhora da Alminha) that brought the first settlers who founded the city.
